Match the outing to your interests
Braga and Guimarães suit a heritage-focused trip; Aveiro offers a different urban and waterside setting. The Douro needs a more deliberate transport plan. Choose one main destination per day, particularly when using public transport.
Check the complete journey
Use CP for rail routes, connections and fares. Your departure and arrival stations matter, and an attraction may require another transfer. Amarante is not a direct train ride from São Bento: check a suitable coach or an onward connection instead.
Leave a return buffer
Save the timetable and make the last possible departure your backup, not your plan. If you include a long meal or tasting, shorten the sightseeing list. Compare all transfers and admissions when choosing between a self-guided outing and a tour, rather than looking only at the train fare.
