Check provenance
Ask where products were made rather than assuming every Portuguese-themed souvenir is local. Request suitable packing for ceramics. Check destination and baggage rules for food or drink, and keep receipts for any return process you may need.
Leave room in the day
Do not schedule the last shop immediately before an airport transfer. Opening hours vary on holidays and weekends. If a particular maker is the reason for the outing, contact them directly.
