Walk downhill where possible
Alfama rewards a slow route through its lanes and viewpoints. Start higher up if that suits your transport and finish towards the waterfront. Straight-line distances conceal steps and steep paving, so a short route can still feel demanding.
Mix a viewpoint with a cultural stop
Choose Santa Luzia or Portas do Sol for a pause, then consider the Museu do Fado if its programme interests you. Book a particular evening performance separately. Leave a margin between your afternoon visit and dinner rather than filling every hour.
Respect the streets
This is a residential neighbourhood. Keep entrances clear, ask before photographing people closely and avoid following private stairs or doorways. Wear shoes with grip, especially after rain. A walking plan is not a promise of step-free access; verify the exact route if mobility is a concern.
