Central starting points
Baixa is a useful introduction, with Chiado uphill and Alfama to the east. Combine adjacent areas and leave time for cafés and viewpoints. Walking distance alone can be misleading: the gradient is part of the journey.
Make room for other areas
Belém is a western waterfront outing; Parque das Nações gives you another waterfront setting to the northeast. Príncipe Real and Estrela offer a different pace. Give each cluster enough time rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
Choose accommodation by the address
Compare your arrival route, noise, steps and transport links. A property described as central can involve a difficult walk with luggage. Choose a neighbourhood for your interests, then inspect the building’s practical details. Ask about late arrival and luggage storage if the first or last day will be awkward.
