Things to Do in Lisbon: First-Visit Highlights & Practical Tips

Baixa, Chiado and Alfama first — then Belém or Parque das Nações as a separate day, without stacking every ticket. Updated for 2026.

One finishable cluster first

A first Lisbon visit works when we treat Baixa, Chiado and Alfama as one walkable cluster — not a city-wide museum checklist.

Visit Lisboa places Baixa Pombalina as the historic centre: shops, museums and the post-1755 grid. Alfama is the oldest neighbourhood: cobbles, steep inclines, viewpoints and fado houses, discovered on foot. We start on flatter ground, climb when we still have energy, and leave Belém and Parque das Nações for other days.

Our planning shape (ranges are ours, not official visit lengths):

1. Baixa / Chiado streets — a morning we can finish without rushing.
2. One paid interior — castle or Carmo on this day; Belém monuments later.
3. Lunch buffer — sit down before the climb softens.
4. One viewpoint — sit, look, move on.

If the morning slips, we keep the walk and lunch. We drop the paid interior or a second miradouro. A route we can finish beats a long list.

Baixa, Chiado, Alfama

Walk Baixa first: Rua Augusta toward the river, Praça do Comércio if that is your start, then up into Chiado. Shops and cafés fill time without another admission.

When you are ready to climb, move into Alfama. Visit Lisboa is explicit about stairs and uneven paving. Wear shoes with grip. Do not treat a map pin as step-free.

Pick one paid stop for this cluster, not a stack.

Castelo de São Jorge (Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo) — if the walls are the point. Official summer hours (1 March–31 October): daily 09:00–21:00, last admission 20:30; winter (1 November–28/29 February): 09:00–18:00, last admission 17:30. Closed 1 January, 1 May, 24–25 and 31 December. Adult €17 (youth 13–25 €8.50; seniors 65+ €14). Included guided tours “Discovering the Castle” — BOL lists about 1 hour, first-come at the ticket office. Wall-walks and towers can close earlier for safety. Online sales only via the castle’s authorised BOL channel, or buy on site. Lisboa Card holders use the Lisboa Card / Residents queue (adults free with the card on the castle’s free list; ages 13–15 still need a ticket per Visit Lisboa Shop). Confirm on castelodesaojorge.pt.

Museu Arqueológico do Carmo (Largo do Carmo) — shorter paid interior in Chiado. Monday–Saturday; November–April 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:40); May–October 10:00–19:00 (last entry 18:40). Closed Sundays, 1 January, 1 May, 25 December. Adults €7; student / senior / Portuguese residents €5; children 0–14 free with an adult. Official: museuarqueologicodocarmo.pt. Metro listed: Baixa-Chiado.

Skip if time is short: a second paid interior; treating tram 28 as a guaranteed sightseeing tour (Carmo lists it only as how-to-arrive). Stairs plus one castle or one ruin is enough. Leave a lunch gap before Alfama’s steeper lanes.

One viewpoint, not five

Official Visit Lisboa miradouros we can name this run:

• Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — Rua da Senhora do Monte à Graça. One of the calmer panoramas: castle hillside, Baixa rooftops, Tagus.
• Miradouro de Santa Luzia — Largo das Portas do Sol e de Santa Luzia. Tiles, garden, Tagus and Alfama roofs.
• Miradouro das Portas do Sol — same Alfama balcony cluster on Visit Lisboa’s Fado route; terrace / kiosk noted there.
• Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Adamastor) — Alto de Santa Catarina. River and bridge light; better as a Chiado-side late stop than a fifth Alfama climb.

Our planning range: 20–40 minutes at one miradouro if you sit. Stairs are Visit Lisboa’s Alfama access note — we do not invent lift shortcuts. If the castle ran long, skip a second viewpoint.

Belém as a separate day

Do not stack Belém with Parque das Nações. Both need a real transfer from the historic centre.

Access (official routes only):

• Carris 15E — Pç. Figueira ↔ Algés, stops include Altinho (MAAT), Belém (Museu Coches) and Mosteiro Jerónimos. Check live departures on Carris / CARRISway; we are not quoting intervals.
• CP Cascais line — Belém is on the Cascais urban line (covered by the 24h Carris/Metro/CP product on Metro Lisboa’s buy page). Confirm on cp.pt.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos — cloister Tuesday–Sunday 09:30–17:30 (last entry 17:00); church hours differ. Closed Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June, 25 December. Ticket office closes 16:30. Adult €18. Official: mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt/visitar. Buy ahead — day tickets often sell out.

Torre de Belém — Tuesday–Sunday 09:30–17:30 (last entry 17:00); same Monday / holiday closures; adult €15. Weather can close it for safety. Same visitar page. Confirm access on your date — capacity and Lisboa Card slot rules apply.

MAAT (Av. Brasília, Belém) — Wednesday–Monday 10:00–19:00; closed Tuesdays (also 1 Jan, 1 May, 25 Dec). From 16 September 2026 standard admission €16 non-residents / €12 Portugal residents (temporary lower rates until 14 September 2026 during a gallery install). Official: maat.pt/en/plan-a-visit. Use as an alternative if Jerónimos slots are gone — not stacked with both Jerónimos and the tower.

Pastéis de Belém — Rua de Belém 84–92; pasteisdebelem.pt states open every day. A queue, not a reservation. Already on our restaurants draft; it does not replace lunch.

Our Belém timing (planning, not official): half day for one timed monument + waterfront + pastry; full day if you add MAAT or a long riverside walk. If Jerónimos is closed (Monday) or sold out, swap with the centre day — do not force Parque das Nações into the gap.

Parque das Nações, not Belém II

Oceanário de Lisboa sits at Doca dos Olivais in Parque das Nações. Official: daily 10:00–20:00, last entry 19:00; special hours on 24, 25, 31 December and 1 January. Average visit duration stated by Oceanário: 1h30 to 2h. Adult (13–64) by slot: €29 (10:00–11:30), €27 (12:00–15:30), €25 (16:00–18:30). Buy at tickets.oceanario.pt or on site. Confirm: oceanario.pt/en/visit.

Reach the park on the Metro Red Line toward the eastern waterfront / Oriente (airport is also on Red Line). Oceanário lists Carris bus numbers on its how-to-get page. Build one focus: Oceanário plus a walk — not Belém monuments after lunch.

Skip if time is short: a second paid waterfront stop; any “one river day” that merges Belém and Parque das Nações.

Tickets vs passes

Count only places you will actually enter. Add transfer time. Walks, cafés and miradouros need no admission.

24h Carris/Metro/CP — €11.40 on Metro Lisboa buy: unlimited Carris, Metro and CP urban lines (Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja, Sado) for 24 hours after first validation. Strong when the day is mostly transport + free viewpoints. Single Carris/Metro €1.90 (60 minutes); 24h Carris/Metro only €7.25.

Lisboa Card — official Visit Lisboa Shop: physical card after voucher redeem at Ask Me Lisboa desks; 24 / 48 / 72 hours; transport plus free entry to many museums. Online prices this review (−5% promo, VAT included, valid till 31 March 2027): adult €29.45 / €48.45 / €58.90; child (4–15) €19.95 / €26.60 / €33.25. Jerónimos and Torre need date/time booking after you hold the physical card — slots are capacity-limited and not guaranteed. Castelo: Lisboa Card / Residents queue. Many national museums close Mondays. Shop also flags temporary closures (e.g. Santa Justa lift, several national museums). Do the maths with your real list; a walk-heavy first day may only need the €11.40 transport ticket. Confirm every price on the day.

Day trips on other days

Sintra and Cascais are different trains and different days:

• Sintra day trip — CP Sintra line.
• Cascais guide — CP Cascais line from Cais do Sodré.

Do not bolt either onto a Belém morning.
