Arrive at Cascais station, walk into the centre, and build the day around the bay — one town beach, a meal, and optional museums or a short coastal walk. Leave Guincho and a full Boca-plus-Guincho stack for another outing.
One town day, not a coast crawl
A first Cascais day from Lisbon works when we treat it as one town loop, not a packed coast crawl.
Arrive at Cascais station, walk into the centre, and build the day around the bay. The streets near Praça 5 de Outubro, a town beach, and a proper lunch already fill a calm day. We do not need to fill every hour.
Optional add-ons that stay inside or beside the centre:
- Casa das Histórias Paula Rego and/or Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães — check opening days before you go.
- Boca do Inferno as a separate coastal walk with designated viewing areas — not a “must stack” with Guincho on the same afternoon.
What we leave off a first town day:
- Praia do Guincho — a separate outing west of town (Sintra-Cascais Natural Park; wind and swell).
- Casino Estoril — in neighbouring Estoril, not Cascais.
- Costa da Caparica — another municipality and another coast; it is not a Cascais beach.
If the morning train slips, keep the bay and lunch. Drop the museum or the coastal walk instead of racing both. Confirm before booking any timed or paid visit.

Train from Cais do Sodré
The Cascais line starts at Cais do Sodré. Staying near that station keeps a car-free Lisbon base for this day — see where to stay in Lisbon.
Check the live timetable on CP the night before. We are not inventing journey minutes here; confirm departure and return on the day.
Urban CP fares are zonal. Do not reuse an old blog single for Cais do Sodré–Cascais. Two official products we verified this review:
- A 24-hour Carris/Metro/CP ticket at €11.40 (Metro Lisboa) covers unlimited journeys on Carris, Metro and CP urban lines including Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado, for 24 hours after first validation. That product covers the CP Cascais line. It does not replace local Cascais-area buses unless an official page for your ticket says so — the Metro buy page lists Carris/Metro/CP only.
- CP’s urban price table (in force since 1 January 2026) lists a Lisboa–Cascais return at €5.10. Singles remain zonal by number of zones; count zones on CP’s map and price list before you buy a one-way.
Load tickets on a navegante ocasional (or use the product your machine offers). Validate as required. Compare the return against the 24h product if you also need Metro legs that day. The station is the start of a walkable town loop.
Old town and one town beach
From Cascais station, walk into the centre and keep the day around the bay.
Pick one town beach — the bay beaches near the centre are the point of this loop. Swim or sit only if conditions look right for you; we are not quoting water temperature or “best beach” rankings.
Leave time for the streets around Praça 5 de Outubro and a meal without stacking every viewpoint. Wear shoes for cobbles and the harbour edge.
Guincho is a separate outing.Visit Cascais places Praia do Guincho in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with strong wind and swell — surf territory, not a casual add-on after lunch. Cascais 360 routes you via Cascais station then a BUSCAS local bus (confirm the live route on the day). Do not stack Guincho and Boca with museums on one afternoon.
Municipal Bicas bikes: posts at the CP Cascais station, near Casa das Histórias, and at Guia. ID and a signed form; kiosks 08:00–20:00, bikes back by 19:00; closed 1 January and 25 December. Confirm on cascais.pt ciclovia.
Optional museums
Neither museum is required for a bay day. Add one if you care about the collection and the day still has room.
Casa das Histórias Paula Rego
Avenida Papa Francisco 132, Cascais. Listed hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00; closed Monday, Easter Sunday, 1 May, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. General admission €5 on the Bairro dos Museus bilhética and Cascais 360 pages (senior / student / Cascais resident discounts listed there). Buy at the venue unless you use an official pack. Temporary exhibitions may add a fee. Confirm hours and price on the day.
Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães
In Parque Marechal Carmona / Santa Marta cove (Av. Rei Humberto II de Itália). Cascais 360 lists free entry. Hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00; closed Monday, Easter Sunday, 1 May, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Note for 2026: the same page flags a closure on 30–31 May 2026 for the Koala Festival. Tower views depend on weather and site rules — ask on arrival.
A Bairro dos Museus one-day multi-site ticket is listed at €7.50 (confirm inclusions). An integrated CP Cascais line pack is listed at €9, sold only at CP Cascais-line ticket offices — confirm on sale. If you are behind schedule, skip both museums; the bay still works.
Boca do Inferno as an optional walk
Visit Cascais describes Boca do Inferno as a sea-carved rock formation minutes from Cascais centre, with Atlantic swell through an open arch, accessible viewpoints, and a coastal walkway linking it toward town. Address listed: Av. Rei Humberto II de Itália 642, Cascais.
Stay in the designated viewing areas. Wet rock and spray are not a reason to climb past barriers. Treat Boca as optional — a coastal walk, not a second beach day, and not stacked with Guincho. If lunch runs long, walk the harbour and take the train home.
Estoril casino is not Cascais
Casino Estoril sits in neighbouring Estoril, on the same Cascais line but a different stop. Costa da Caparica is another municipality south of the Tagus — not a Cascais beach and not on this train loop. Cascais bay, Estoril casino, Caparica coast are three different places.
Lunch without a fake list
We are not inventing a Cascais restaurant list. Walk the centre, read a menu, and sit down when you are ready.
For seafood: ask if fish is priced by weight and how many people a portion serves before you order. A low board price can become a large bill once weight is on the scale.

If the morning slips, eat first and drop the museum. A late museum exit plus a hoped-for Guincho bus is how the return train gets stressful.
Return train or overnight
Check the return on CP before you wander west of the centre. Last comfortable trains matter more than first trains if you linger at Boca.
For a car-free overnight, stay near Cascais station or in the walkable centre. Compare dates, cancellation and any local tourist tax on the property’s own checkout. Cascais runs a municipal overnight tourist tax portal; the euro rate is not quoted in this draft ([confirm] on booking).
